A new study published in the Journal of Dental Research confirmed that smoking regularly can have a dramatic effect on your oral health. The study, summarized by the University of Birmingham, was carried out by researchers at the University of Birmingham and the German Institute of Human Nutrition.
The research, which featured over 23,000 participants, found that male smokers are over three times more likely to lose their teeth than non-smokers, while female smokers are over two times more likely. However, quitting smoking can decrease your risk to that of a non-smoker – although it can take over ten years. The association of smoking and periodontitis helps explain this increased risk of tooth loss.
