Welcome Dr. Matthew Choi as Partner

We are pleased to announce that Dr. Matthew Choi has become a partner at the Marshall Clinic!

Since my father Dr. Don Marshall retired over 10 years ago, I have been looking for the right person to join our team. After years of working with associate dentists, we have finally found Matthew.

Matthew graduated from the UBC Faculty of Dentistry in 2013. He spent his early years working in a busy clinic in Cranbrook, BC before returning to Vancouver to marry his lovely wife, Sherry. A keen learner who averages more than 200 hours annually on continuing education, Matthew spent last year completing an intensive 300-hour implant curriculum and is currently working his way through the world-renown Kois curriculum in Seattle.

From relieving pain via teeth extractions in a correction facility, to working in fast-paced offices driven by urgent care dentistry, and now to a practice focusing in comprehensive and preventive care, Matthew has experienced a wide variety of dental practice models so far in his career. He has come to understand the joy of practicing predictable and long lasting dentistry and is determined to continue the Marshall tradition of dental excellence and patient-centric care since 1925.

As part of the process in moving towards partnership, we spent many hours talking about our goals, hopes, and dreams. Through exercises to explore our personal values, we found that we shared identical visions of placing the best interest of our patients first, providing the best care possible, and to sum it up, doing what is right.

There have been many moments of truth in coming to understand that Matthew had the right stuff. One of them is evident in this email from a patient whose daughter was visiting for the Christmas holidays:

Bruce:

On Christmas Day my daughter Andrea broke a tooth while eating popcorn. Needless to say she was concerned and experienced mild to moderate pain. I recommended to her husband that he call your office (they are from Calgary). Dr. Choi met us at Noon on December 26. He repaired Andrea’s tooth (temporary). I am so grateful for this level of service and professionalism. Prior to the appointment Dr. Choi discussed the matter with Andrea on the phone. She tells me this morning that she was phoned and has paid the bill – the fee being much less than anticipated.

This was an extraordinary effort by Dr. Choi on a holiday. He is certainly a credit to your practice.

My thanks to Matthew and your practice for this level of care in an urgent situation on a holiday!

Another moment of truth was when I had the opportunity to have him replace a fractured veneer for me. The freezing was done perfectly without sensation and the rest of the procedure done by gentle hands with excellent results.

Matthew and I both believe in investing the time to get to know patients because the Marshall Clinic is built on relationships. We believe in co-diagnosing with patients because education is what drives patients to make the best informed judgements for themselves. We also believe in investing the time to do comprehensive exams and giving each patient a personalized risk assessment. Lastly, we see the importance of phased treatment plans because we understand that dentistry may not always be the top priority in one’s life. Having seen patients of multiple generations come through our door in the long history of the practice, we have seen patients learn to control their dental disease and lead a more predictable, healthier future with fewer costly interventions.

Together, Matthew and I will be able to expand our clinical care hours and welcome even more new patients. We look forward to being of service!

Sincerely,
Dr. Bruce Marshall B.Sc., D.M.D.
